How do I make life easier in the kitchen for someone with dementia?

The kitchen can be dangerous.

Ensuring the safety of a person living with dementia is essential, so it makes sense to take precautions wherever possible, particularly where cookers and hot saucepans are involved.

If a person still enjoys cooking and is able to prepare meals, whether on their own or with help from others, a range of products is available to help them carry out the task safely. However, if they live on their own, it is worth making sure that they are still able to heat things without the risk of leaving them on to burn. If they use a gas cooker, this should also be checked by their gas company to make sure there are no leaks. The gas company might also recommend fitting a gas isolation tap, so that the gas can be turned off when there is no one else present.

Opening tins or jars can be a problem, while handling hot saucepans and kettles is a potential safety hazard if dexterity is limited. The right aids can make working in the kitchen easier and safer.

Useful products are also available if a person has arthritic hands which make it hard to pick up and grip things easily, or if they are unsteady on their feet and need to move things around the kitchen.

The kitchen should also be checked to ensure it is adequately lit and there are no trip hazards. If there are still concerns, then we recommend that you consult an occupational therapist for further advice and help.
